Wise words from Mr. Thompson, erstwhile bootlegger and burgeoning mafia man incarnate of Boardwalk Empire. But to fully concern ourselves with the now we also have to look back, take a little pilfer through the banks of what has come before in order to concern ourselves with the pressing matters of today.

2011 was another great year for music, the old vanguard was in full force with stellar records coming from the amazing PJ Harvey, a reformed The Feelies, Mogwai, Radiohead, Tom Waits, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks and Thurston Moore alike. New turks such as the Twerps evoked a long lost sound of Flying Nun New Zealand guitar pop godliness, shambolic in it's nature but with enough fresh youthful verve to make the old new again. Peaking Lights tripped us up with their dub concoction of steady beats and blissfully meandering psych, and even Dan Bejar of Destroyer learned to love the Sax. To concern ourselves with the now, we have to look to the past.

TOP TEN 2011

10. Cass McCombs - Wit's End / Humor Risk

I've been a fan of Cass McCombs since I first heard his classic song 'I went to the hospital' almost 10 years ago. This year I got to see him play live for the first time, a stripped down laid back show where he sat and played guitar nonchalantly to hipsters barely able to look up from the bask of their iphone glow. It was perfect. Cass released 2 albums in 2011 a mere 7 months apart and both of them are stunners. From the VUisms of 'Humor Risk' to the more restrained AM radio friendly 'Wit's End,' the stirring 'County Line' is the obvious highlight, with enough hushed whoa whoa whoa's and dime store blues that it plays like a furtive love song for a narcoleptic River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves and all the other lost drugstore cowboys out there yearning and hoping to cross their own state lines.

9. A Winged Victory For The Sullen - s/t

Chamber pop fans of the indie set rejoice, the Sturm und Drang is back (with less sturm und more drang). This album from the duo of Berlin composer Dustin O'Halloran and Adam Wiltzie (of fellow somnambulists Stars of the Lid) is bringing the baroque back big time. The perfect accompaniment for those of you out there pining for the next Rachel's or Godspeed You! Black Emperor lp's that have yet to come. It's the next best thing to actually going out and buying a classical album. They still make those you know. File Under: for those of you who are tired of studying to Sigur Ros.

8. Real Estate - Days

From an article in last October's Fader magazine, frontman Martin Courtney sums up his band by saying "Everyone's parents like it. Everyone can dig it." It's not hard to see why. No, they don't make Mom & Pop rock, but rather songs so streamlined and smooth they pass over you in a haze until you're tapping your feet and humming along. I picked the record up on a dismal Vancouver afternoon and I listened to it on repeat 3 or 4 times driving around my rain slicked city. Jams so languid and mellow they unfold like slow moving fog falling off the New Jersey turnpike. Let it seep in and it will take you over.

7. Charles Bradley - No Time For Dreaming

With all of the revivalism going on lately, what with Yuck's appropriation (rather brilliantly too) of vintage SST era Dinosaur Jr. 90's Pavementesque swagger to the M83/Destroyer/Cut Copy blatant 80's aural worship, for the best debut of the year we have to look back even further still. Charles Bradley has some tales to tell. And at the ripe young age of 62, this first record, recorded with the Menahan Street Band, lays it all right down on the barrel head. A modern day soul crooner in the Otis Redding, James Brown school, Charles Bradley sings it like he's lived it, and he has. Hard loving, hard living, hard times. One hopes he's just getting started.

6. The Drums - Portamento

A good simple pop song goes a long way. A few minutes, a few chords and some youthful abandon is all it takes sometimes. The jittery start to first single 'Money,' a summer song of big love and low cash, grabs hold right away. The Drums second album continues their trend of catchy songs good for days on the beach or spent listlessly looking out windows. Songs that stay stuck in your head but you don't mind, not like some numbers about ubiquitous homicidal kids with pumped up sneakers. It's no wonder Johnny Marr is a huge fan.

5. Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat - Everything's Getting Older

I've always loved Arab Strap, Aidan Moffat's previous band with Malcolm Middleton. Songs of love and devotion with a wee Glasgow lilt. Devotion to drink, devotion to whoring, devotion to drunken mornings waking up and railing against it all. Everything's Getting Older, it's true, but like David Wooderson's high school girls in Dazed and Confused, the songs remain the same. His new album with collaborator and Glasgow Jazz multi instrumentalist Bill Wells continues the tradition in fine form. In fact, it might be the best record he's ever recorded. "Birth, love and death. The only reasons to get dressed up." On the day his next album comes out I'm going to prove him wrong by marching down to my local record shop wearing a three piece suit (charcoal grey). With a corsage.

4. SBTRKT - s/t

This is the face of dubstep in 2011, or rather the mask of dubstep, nobody wants to show their face anymore. James Blake had the mellow tunes, Skrillex the screams and the dancing punters, SBTRKT brought the emotion back, albeit emotions you couldn't see (he's wearing a mask, duh) but they were there nonetheless. A stellar album of night time reverie and midnight swoons. Hold on, listen, turn away.

3. Destroyer - Kaputt

2011, the year Destroyer learned to put down the keytar and love the sax. This record was viewed as incredibly derisive amongst many of my friends and peers and it's no wonder to see why. It has enough slow jams and sax fills to make even Godley and Cream whince. I savoured every note. I remember seeing him years ago driving away from Vancouver's dearly departed video store mecca, Videomatica, with his wife in a beat up blue station wagon. I waved, I think he nodded. We understood each other then. I'll stick by him. Dan Bejar, the poet laureate of Vancouver's lower East Side. Carry on, carry on. Everything's fine in Chinatown.

Twerps - s/t

I'm currently based out of Australia, and since I've been here I've actively been seeking out some new sounds from way down. From Bitch Prefect and Hit the Jackpot in Adelaide, to Sydney's Royal Headache and the new slack underground of the Melbourne (Williamsburg for surfers) lo fi scene, there's certainly lots to discover. My favorite so far is Twerps, a Flying Nun fixated band from Melbourne, lackadaisically laying down tracks of smudged pop perfection. The Clean, The Chills and the Velvet Underground all leave their mark. They wear their influences sure, but who doesn't these days. A great record for the party and the comedown after.

1. Peaking Lights - 936

I always have a hard time compiling top album picks for year end lists, perhaps explaining my lack of punctuality in posting this year. Was 2011 truly exceptional or am I just incredibly indecisive? A bit of both really. What I never have a hard time deciding upon is my pick for the album of the year. Usually it's a given by what I listen to the most or have a hard time putting down. This year it was Peaking Lights. Mellow dub sounds percolate underneath a cacophony of homemade synthesiser beats from this man and wife duo from Wisconsin. Simple yet effective. All the sun that shines and all around. Easily the best thing I heard all year.

Things That Sucked In 2011

5. That this painting doesn't actually exist. In reality I mean. I hate the Black Eyed Peas with a passion. I've also always been smitten with the sarcastic charm of April Ludgate on Parks and Recreation. The only problem is that decapitation would be too quick and kind. I would want them to suffer.

4. Coldplay - Para - para - para ....
Damn. I can't even bring myself to type it out in case I get that insipid horrid song stuck in my head. I blame Gwynnie. And yoga.

3. The continued take-over of shitfolk as people inexplicably continue to lose their shit over Mumford & Sons. Why? It makes me long for the glory days of the great unwashed Davendra Banhart. Exactly. There is a special place in hell reserved for pretentious middle class fiddle fuckers.

2. Loutallica. The worst album released this year, this decade. Any decade. What? No, of course I haven't heard it.

1. The death of Trish Keenan. I was a big fan of Broadcast and was saddened to hear of her passing from pneumonia early on in 2011. She was only 42. The good: James Cargill is working on a new album that will utilize some previously recorded vocals. I was lucky enough to finally see Broadcast live in 2009, when they toured with Atlas Sound. Bradford Cox dedicated the utterly gorgeous third Atlas Sound album 'Paralax' to Trish. Classy move. RIP.

My first mix from the land down under. No Men at Work, but plenty of other great Australian bands, plus the usual slap and tickle. The best band I've discovered so far is Twerps from Melbourne - a great throwback to the Oz / New Zealand sound of yesteryear (a little dash of The Go-Betweens & The Clean with patchwork chords and half muttered/sung throwaway lyrics).

My favorite band from Adelaide so far is Bitch Prefect. They've released one 7" record and a couple of songs on blogs and mixes. I bought the 7" at a booth set up at a local show for some emerging Adelaide bands. I asked if Bitch Prefect would be playing anytime soon and was told probably not as two of the main members of the band had sodded off travelling. How Australian is that!

Adelaide is a fun, sleepy city with lots to discover. The seasons reverse and I find myself miles from home. The summer winds howl as back home the snow begins to fall. No worries.

Beautiful Pigeon is on the move. I have a job starting up soon in Australia, where I will be based out of Adelaide. I have lived down under before, just over 10 years ago when I was an exchange student at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. I was told in my telephone interview that they wouldn't hold that against me.

I look forward to exploring Adelaide, discovering new bands and yes, jaunting along to the outback, perhaps on the walkabout that eluded John Locke. But mostly, I'm looking forward to the (near British like) fish n' chips and the pies. It's all about the pies.

Here is a special all mix of all Australian bands (and one cover of Australia's favorite sons AC/DC by Mark Kozelek). Some I heard on my travels as a student years ago (2 litre dolby, Art of Fighting, The Avalanches) and some even earlier still when I was just a wee ankle biter (Nick Cave, The Go-Betweens, The Church).

The Melbourne collective, The Avalanches released their seminal album "Since I Left You" the last time I lived abroad. Next year they are gearing up to finally release their second album. Coincidence or happenstance? Somethings are just meant to be.

I was born on October 9, 1971, the same year John Lennon released 'Imagine' on September 9th, just one month shy of his 31st birthday (it was released in the UK on October 8th).

Music has always been a huge part of my life, and having a little look back, it seems that 1971 was a pretty seminal year. The number one song at the time of my birth across the land was 'Maggie May' by Rod Stewart. I can live with that. My favorite album by David Bowie was released that year, along with one of my most cherished albums of all time, 'Tago Mago' by the krautrock legends CAN. (I dare you to listen to the full 18 minute version of 'Halleluhwah' and not start swaying to the groove and become a devotee for life. If a more perfect song exists, I have yet to hear it). These were albums that helped forge my own musical identity and upbringing, even if I was just barely born. Perhaps like Marc Bolan, I too danced myself out of the womb?

In the words of John Lennon: "you may say that I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one." I'm turning 40 this year and if John Lennon was still alive, today he would be 71. John's not with us today, but his message of peace and love will live on forever. This mix is for dreamers everywhere. We all have to get a little bit older, the least we can do is enjoy the ride.

but that was yesterday, that was not today. my favorite film of the summer was 'submarine' directed by richard ayoade. a well crafted ode to the 80's and first love, it was probably made for less than the catering budget on shitformers 3.

we all have known the pangs of first love, from a casual glance to rising infatuation, followed soon by first rejection. it still stings. these are songs for a grown up oliver tate, mid-life ennui encroaching, sense of french whimsy still intact.

i'm completely besotted with the new album '936' by Madison, WI duo Peaking Lights, easily one of the best records i've heard all year. a fine hour long trip of floaty guitars and mashed up homemade synthesizer sounds percolating underneath a nice dubby haze. it has got me thinking of dub music in general, the pulse of the groove, the feeling of the vibrations as you slowly succumb to the beat.

aside from a mild fondness for The Clash's Sandinista! triple player and a half remembered singing sunflower commercial that played lots when I lived in the UK in the early 90's, I can't actually say I know a whole lot about dub music. and by doing research and wading in the masses of thumping bass and ska-rite riffs, I can honestly say that about 99 % of dub songs sound exactly the same.

is it the beat or the groove that makes it click? the treble and bass kick in and unbeknownst to you, your head starts to bob and nod. curl up, switch off ... and sway.

MY BLOODY VALENTINE

it was the emergence of shoegaze and a different type of guitar music for the masses, well the masses of lads that were at the front of the stage staring at all the fret peddles and efx boards. it was the scene that celebrated itself, a new era of pop music for those who wanted something more than just a laugh and to get legged up on the weekends. and to a few of us out there, hankering down in anoraks and hair in big soppy fringes, it meant something.

Creation Records (1983 - 1999) was co-formed and run by Alan McGee, a surly ginger kid from Glasgow who was just as likely to deck you one if you as much as looked at his pint. later on though, he'd likely shrug it off, give you a hug and offer you an album deal. Creation didn't work like anyone else. it was a call to arms. a big up yours to bands such as Take That and the half wit chart toppers on Top of the Pops.

jean-luc godard once famously stated that all you need to make a film is a girl and a gun. all you need to make a record in the Creation roster is a guitar, an effects pedal and a boatload of drugs.

no one exemplified this more than the burned out, tripped up and eternally euphoric Primal Scream, who with the assistance from the equally blissed out club dj Andrew Weatherall, turned their indie jingle jangle sound into house dub heaven. Their third album, Screamadelica, released in 1991 and reissued in an extensive collector's set in 2011, is a stone cold classic album and continues to sound amazing today. higher than the sun and more closer to heaven than you'll ever be.

from 1983 - 1999 Creation signed a slew of bands and released a new pop consciousness onto the English scene that resonated with sullen music obsessives the world round. from the young shoegaze upstarts like slowdive and ride to the literate pop genius of pat fish of the jazz butcher and lawrence from felt, Creation paved the way for the new Anglophile invasion, almost singly-handedly spawning a plethora of record obsessives statewide scouring the record bins of their local shops just to be the first in line to have the latest single. the guitar squal of swervedriver and the hypnotic extended mix of 'never lose that feeling/never learn' bought in Nottingham at my local shop has always been a long standing fave.

alongside the primals and their shambolic bliss groove with 'screamadelica' and the classic a.m. power pop of teenage fanclub and 'bandwagonesque' (Spin magazine's album of the year), 1991 continued to be a watershed year with the release of the long delayed second album by My Bloody Valentine, 'Loveless.'

these were guitar sounds for the masses, a headphone album of the highest order, but only if your brain could somehow handle colm o'ciosig's tribal merciless pounding and guitars and thumping bass that cut straight through the haze. kevin shields had somehow found a way to feed his guitar ecstasy and enthusiasts were easily eager to nod and sway along and let the music and drugs kick in at equal force. tranquil states of minds, guitars and a cloud of hiss. a sound unfamiliar and yet somehow soothing; a cacophony of tremolo and distortion, male vocals and female coos buried so beneath the mix they were even less intelligible than the unintelligible elizabeth fraser of the cocteau twins.

to many in stripey shirts and battered doc martins, it was a godsend moment - the heavens had opened up and given us kevin shields. the sounds on 'Loveless' had never been heard before and have since been copied but never replicated, not even by the man himself. though my bloody valentine reunited and toured in 2008, their first US shows in almost 18 years, a follow up to 'Loveless' still has never materialized. it exists on hard drives and home demos, circling and percolating in the mind of a sleeping shoegaze giant.

the recording of 'Loveless' has been well documented and we'll never know for sure the whole truth behind all the half lies and innuendos; that it cost Creation over £ 250,000 with a plethora of engineers in over 19 studios, almost bankrupting the label and forcing a buy out from Sony to save them from the mire. it remains an absolutely landmark album, nonetheless, of it's time, but timeless all the same.

in 1994 they recouped their losses when they signed a bunch of mancunian beatles obsessives called oasis. for their history, as if you don't know it already, you'll have to direct your beady eyes somewhere else. aside from some cigarettes and alcohol and something about a wonder wall, they never meant much to me. their place on this mix has been taken up by 2 songs by the late, lamented felt.

in the 1980's, sunlight bathed the golden glow, and felt released 10 albums in 10 years (5 of which were issued by Creation). and then they promptly split up. lawrence became somewhat of a recluse following those formative years, emerging with some glam rock swagger and a new band denim in 1992 and later with the synthy sounds of go kart mozart, but neither of these were able to recapture his earlier sound or success. visit a great site dedicated to lawrence and felt: here.

Where does inspiration hit? On a billboard out of the corner of your eye as you go bustling past on the train ride home. An idea on the cusp and sometimes it clings. Nothing is original anymore. Everything's been done. But you can still make something beautiful out of all of the left over fragments.

What is a beautiful pigeon and what does it have to do with music? Well, you see, Beautiful Pigeon is a song. It's a song by the late, lamented British/USA pseudo-shoegaze band Moonshake. It's also the inspiration for this blog. Moonshake, in turn, took their name from a song by the krautrock legends CAN. See, nothing is original anymore. Everything's been done.

nu gaze:

An updated genre of pop that derives from the mid 90s scene with bands like Slowdive, Chapterhouse, My Bloody Valentine. Big noisy, bee-like guitar sound.

i've never been a fan of the label "nu gaze," finding it derivative and fairly derogatory ... but hey, if the shoegaze fits. we didn't want new anything. we weren't waiting for the second coming of Jesus Jones, we just wanted the whoosh and the fuzz back. i never liked "ethereal" or "dream pop" either. what were they dreaming about? and why could we never hear what they were saying?

i've always loved Shoegaze, the music and the self-contained scene it entailed - all woozy guitars, propulsive drums and vocals floating above it all in a succint haze. it's the sound of my youth and something I return to often. and nowadays it seems like i'm not the only one. the last few years have seen a plethora of bands reaching for their battered guitars and calling up Death By Audio for the perfect effects pedal.

Oliver Ackermann, the brain trust behind Death By Audio and the band A Place To Bury Strangers (and also the cover star of this post and the main beautiful pigeon page proper) has never heard a harsh echo or a dissonant guitar tone he couldn't manipulate and mangle into a thousand dead suns. Gang Gang Dance have often taken their MBV records down from the shelf. it only takes just 5 seconds to realize that White Noise Music have more than just a passing interest in the Spacemen 3.

the new album by The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Belong, was produced by Flood (PJ Harvey, Smashing Pumpkings, U2) and mixed by shoegaze stalwart Alan Moulder (Swervedriver, Ride, MBV, Curve, Lush, JAMC). the opening guitar riff on the title track sounds just like a Mach 2 Cocteau Twins or a caffeinated Chapterhouse for a new generation. and then the song progresses to .... well, let's just say they weren't kidding about their adoration of The Smashing Pumpkins, but at least it's Gish era Pumpkins (which was essentially revved up shoegaze anyway) and not the bald, bloated walking rock cliché they have become today.

some bands are content to wear their shoegaze hearts on their sleeves. others are content to rip it off and replicate it completely. Ringo Deathstarr, from Texas, sound as if they took the last flight to London, broke into Creation Records HQ, stole all the master tapes and then set out to re-record them verbatim. their debut album is called Colour Trip, itself a fairly shoegazey title, though perhaps instead it should be called Loveless Revisited, or simply Shameless. it's a good record, but the purist in me cries foul.

it starts with a guitar and a heart, and ends with I don't need no love, I've got my band. the old sound is new again. the scene that celebrated itself is back, if indeed it ever went away in the first place. they've been at the bar this whole time, just waiting for it to be your shout.

I Saw God's Shadow On This World

I truly miss the Silver Jews. David Berman had a unique way of looking at life; a Bukowski mind with a Malkmus pose. He saw God's shadow on this world and we're all the better for it. My favorite record by them, the great Tanglewood Numbers, was released in 2005, of which a song appears on here. He doesn't make music anymore but he hasn't stopped working. He has an excellent new blog here. Get to it. More great dispatches for all us punks in the beerlights.

While some lose the inspiration to record, others are taken from us way too soon. I was truly shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Trish Keenan of Broadcast earlier this year of pneumonia at the young age of 42. I doubt she learned all the secrets to life, the universe and everything and had so much more to give. I have been a massive fan of Broadcast since their first compilation Work and Non Work first appeared in 1997 and was lucky enough to finally see them live in 2009. This mix is dedicated to Trish and Broadcast fans everywhere.

Everyday is a weekend when you are unemployed. And by that, I mean specifically Sunday night at 11:39 p.m. Yes, that's right, Everyday is like Sunday. You can't sleep and you are suddenly filled with a deep sense of dread because you know that you are going to wake up on Monday morning with no place to go.

The doldrums set in. Daytime TV soon loses its luster. Games shows just aren't the same as when you were home from school as a kid. I look at Drew Carey hosting The Price Is Right now and all I can think is would somebody please get that man a sandwich! Dude must be starving. Lately it feels like I have been living out a song by The Dead Milkmen. Unfortunately, that song is track # 17 on Beelzebubba. Next year Oprah will be gone. What will happen to me then?

There's A Party In My Head - Top 10 2010

2010 was a pretty great year for music, so lets trip the light fantastic and take a little look back, shall we?

TOP TEN 2010

10. Gold Panda - Lucky Shiner

It was no great shock to see Gold Panda pop up on a year end list by Caribou's Dan Snaith, as the band this most reminds me of is Manitoba, Snaith's first nom de plume and the place he first got his chops before he let go of the sampler and picked up the electric guitar. It was always the music from him I loved the best. 'Lucky Shiner' has got that same simple charm in its mish mash beats and sampled timpani. It also reminds me a lot of The Field filtered down into more sizeable morsels, like glitch pop hors d'oeuvres. Not a bad thing at all. Quite lovely.

9. The Radio Dept - Clinging To A Scheme

The Radio Dept are the anti-Deerhunter and a modern shoegaze equivalent of The Wedding Present: not at all prolific and, Thurston Moore samples aside, all of the songs sound the same. Somewhere out there Sofia Coppola is sitting in front of Final Draft with her headphones on.

8. Beach Fossils - s/t

Well I can hardly stand

But I really don't care to know

And you can take my hand

But I don't care where we go

Slacker lyrics, a little twee and enough reverb to make Dick Dale scream in glee. This is indie guitar rock in 2010, Captured Tracks style. This is an album I simply couldn't put down and stop listening to. An autumn record perfect all year round.

7. Pantha Du Prince - Black Noise

German minimalist techno and IDM so idyllic, it's perfect for your chalet in the Swiss Alps. What you don't have a chalet in the Swiss Alps? Feel free to put on your headphones and sink into the couch like the rest of us then. And yet another example of why I prefer the Animal Collective side projects and guest spots as opposed to their albums proper. The Panda Bear vocals on 'Stick To My Side' culminates in one of the best songs of the year. Glaciers uproot and turn and face the West. They like to dance too.

6. Beach House - Teen Dream

Beach House make midnight music for somnambulists and narcoleptic disco for the indie set all at once. And on this, their third album, the duo of Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally have produced their finest songs yet. "Any way you run, you run before us," she sings on 'Zebra' and she's right; they've been here before and the template hasn't really changed all that much. Though as they come into their stride it's as if they now realize that it's ok to pick up the pace, add a drum or two ... even if it's just for a little while. Absolutely spellbinding, but you knew that already.

5. Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest

Bradford Cox can do no wrong. While not as wildly majestic or as epic as their previous album Microcastle, Halcyon Digest reveals itself instead in little bursts of pure pop brilliance. The chimes of 'Helicopter,' the slow build of the Jay Reatard tribute 'He Would Have Laughed.' With his insanely prolific output, both in Deerhunter and also with his side project Atlas Sound, you get the distinct impression that Bradford Cox writes songs in his sleep, if indeed he sleeps at all. If Bradford Cox and Robert Pollard of Guided By Voices were locked in a room and forced at gunpoint to enter a songwriting competition, I know who I'd put my money on. With Halcyon Digest, Bradford and the boys (Moses Archuleta, Joshua Fauver and Locket Pundt who provides the stand out track 'Desire Lines') deliver in spades.

4. Tamaryn - The Waves

This is a record with enough lush, retro shoegaze stylings to make even Serena Maneesh jealous. Plus they probably don't look like Norwegian gypsies. So there's that too.

3. Tame Impala - Innerspeaker

I recently saw this band live and I was shocked at how young they were. The guitar player was sporting what I was pretty sure was his first wispy moustache. The bass player looked like an emaciated Stuart Murdoch who could barely lift his Rickenbacher bass. But holy fuck did they ever rock. For once the NME got it right; do not miss this band live. A headphone album of the highest order. Just hand me some bus tokens and my trusty pair of Sennheissers and I'm ready to go.

2. Gonjasufi - A Sufi And A Killer

He may be the shepherd babe but you're never quite sure where this trip is going. The record is a mess. It shouldn't work. But it causes enough double takes and has enough bare knuckles rasta shanty style beats (provided by Flying Lotus and the Gaslamp Killer) and a voice Tom Waits would give his Frito-Lay money for, that you are instantly hooked and can't switch off. Spellbinding and completely messed up. It's what Wayne Coyne plays at his dinner parties after the mescalin has kicked in.

1. Baths - Cerulean

Since it first came out this summer, this has always been the album to beat for me. And as we approach the end of 2010, nothing has even come close (yup, not even Kanye). I was instantly smitten with 'Maximalist,' the whomp and whoosh of the beats, the quirky uplifting samples - 'it takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence' indeed. Helium fueled vocals from a 21 year old kid who wears his heart on his sleeves and with the beats to match. Simply glorious, and easily the best thing i heard all year.

it was the day he had planned to make a brand new start, but the day came too soon like an unannounced guest or an early frost. the light hit his eyes like an electric lamp thrown into a bathtub; the fluorescent clock on the nightstand flashing 11:36 a.m. unaccustomed to waking at such a god forsaken hour he fought the desire to drift aimlessly back into his cherished world of dreams. instead he wiped the sleep from his eyes in an almost unheard of burst of motivation and contemplated a busy day of planning and revision. today he would take charge. today he would get up before noon.

in the mid afternoon he always took a walk. he took the same route everyday and soon began to develop certain rituals. being unemployed, and some would say unemployabe, these regular patterns instilled in him a sense of accomplishment. at one o' clock, or thereabouts, he would purchase his daily coffee and a newspaper. he would then walk to the park and read about all the facets of life that were passing him by in a vain effort to show an interest. at three o' clock he would put down his paper and waited for the girl with headphones.

everyday, almost like clockwork, a girl would arrive and sit at the bench across from him. sometimes she would smile, sometimes not, but always she would be listening to music with a massive set of headphones. he imagined her to have immaculate taste. whatever song he had bustling through his head he imagined her to be listening to it at that same moment. sometimes it was just a smitten of a tune that permeated into all crevices of his mind, while still refusing to reveal its source. the thought made him immeasurably happy; a small connection to brighten his day.

she seemed to possess an unassured sureness, a detached notion of not quite fitting in and not quite caring one way or the other. she sat at her regular bench and noticed the man with the newspaper shyly regarding her from the corner of his eye when he thought she wasn’t looking. she smiled and adjusted the volume on her headset as she leaned back into the uncomfortable bench and closed her eyes. she enjoyed her lunchtime reverie.

the man carefully folded his newspaper, tucked it under his arm and got up to leave. he glanced at the girl with the headphones as he left, shyly offering a half wave and a slight smile. he felt unpeturbed as he considered his plans. tomorrow he would profess his love and sweep her off her feet. tomorrow he would make a brand new start.

We came, we saw, we ate from the food carts. Portland is for lovers. A beautiful city with laid-back people, friendly shop folk (especially at Tender Loving Empire and Canoe), and did I mention the food carts? Thank you, kind people of Oregon - and also to the recently relocated Palm Springs resident, who we met on the street car, and whose enthusiasm and love for his new adopted city was intoxicating.

Portland is for lovers ... and a perfect place for an impromptu honeymoon. And Please note, the song "Lonely Town, Lonely Street" is a creative choice and more a reflection of my afro-sized man-crush on Bill Withers as of late, and not an indication of your fair city. Though we did walk the deserted streets back to the hotel alone one night, after the street cars had run their course. You really can walk faster than those things.

In my haste to assemble the playlist for dinner and the dance to follow, I forgot about the cocktail hour where people drink and mingle and generally consume as much alcohol as possible before the sit down meal. Since I had nothing planned, my friend Hope suggested the lullaby renditions of Radiohead songs. Brilliant! It worked as background music and also caused the occasional ear twitch of recognition by the cool kids and parental types. And it passed the final test: it was beloved by old people. Soothing to the ears for the elders and newborns alike...

Susanna & The Magical Orchestra (actually the duo of Susanna Wallumrød and Morten Qvenild) played their first ever Canadian concert at Performance Works for the Vancouver Jazz Festival. A great show of nuanced cool and Norwegian charm. While they performed a couple of their original songs, as Susanna herself explained, they are most well known for their cover versions, as their set would go on to show. Morten Qvenild, a big Star Wars fan apparently, attacked his keyboards like he was leading mass, whilst Susanna held the crowd in rapture. In due term we heard from AC/DC 'it's a long way to the top,' Bob Dylan 'don't think twice, it's alright,' and their mesmerizing version of Joy Division's 'love will tear us apart.' They even ended with Leonard Cohen's 'hallelujah,' a great song, but one that has endured too long; slightly redeemed by kd Lang at the olympics, only to come crashing back down to wooden monotony with American Idol. Susanna & the Magical Orchestra's version? Absolutely spellbinding.

today marks the 30th anniversary of the death of ian curtis. the enigmatic and often troubled singer for joy division took his own life on may 18th, 1980, two weeks before the start of their first north american tour, and two months before his 24th birthday. words alone cannot express how much his lyrics and music have meant to me throughout the years.

i first heard "love will tear us apart" when i was 15. i bought the 12" record from a small booth at the local flea market in Retford, England having been rather taken with the cover. that record, along with a green cassette copy of the smiths "the queen is dead" given to me by my punk cousin glen, opened up a whole realm of possibilities. joy division was like a gateway drug into a world i never knew existed outside of my inxs and roxette cassettes.

i subsequently went out and bought and devoured everything by joy division, the smiths and the eventual (reformed from the ashes) new order. while this led to a fairly miserable adolescence and lots of lonely days spent tossing playing cards into upturned hats, the seed had been planted. it's safe to say the mixes i post here would not exist without ian curtis and the world he helped expose.

joy division only produced 3 albums during their short time together - "unknown pleasures", "closer", and the posthumous "still" - but they are all absolute classics deserving to be heard or re-heard again. a legacy, sure, you could say that. he never walked in line, he was always two steps ahead. we should all be so lucky.
